As in
The Last Dance and Walking Alone there are two threads in
Runaways, the final volume of
The
Iniquities
Trilogy.
There
are developments in the relationships of the surviving members of the second and
third generations: Susannah's relationships with Carl and her second husband
Jonathan and her final love. The lives of Charles and Linda are
all involved as are the older generations, David, Maureen and Ted.
But the
main plot is driven by the increasing knowledge Susannah has of the war time
actions of the older generation. The reasons for Max's influence on the lives of
the family are explored, the true links between him and Alicia's family are
revealed. The overwhelming influence of Alicia's father, David, is discovered.
The
first generation gives up its hard kept secrets, laying ghosts to rest and
allowing the family some peace at last.
Susannah not only finds the answers to her family's problems, but also finds the
key to her happiness.
